Barbie Collectibles Throughout the Years

Barbie collectibles are a hot item. Everyone’s favorite fashion doll gives us plenty of reasons to collect her in every style released. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular Barbie collectibles throughout the years.

Introduced in 1959, the original doll is one of the most highly sought-after Barbie collectibles around. Barbie debuted in a black and white striped swimsuit and ponytail. She was made from a material that gradually loses its color, causing her to become white throughout the years.

In the early 1960s Barbie wore elegant styles inspired by Paris runways. Her clothes were designed by Charlotte Johnson. Fashion Luncheon and Saturday Matinee were some of the most popular Barbie collectibles of the day. By the mid-60s, bubble-cut hair and fashions inspired by Jacquelyn Kennedy reflected fashion trends. Toward the end of the decade, Barbie was introduced with a Twist-n-Turn waist, a dutch-boy hairstyle, and bendable legs.

During the 1970s, the famous Malibu Barbie was introduced and became an instant Barbie collectible. Designed with a suntan and long blonde hair, she embodied the desired look of the times. She went through several extreme fashion changes during the ‘70s wearing everything from granny dresses to glittering disco outfits.

Barbie collectibles as a craze came to the surface in the 1980s. The first annual Barbie doll convention was held in 1980, and Blue Rhapsody, the first doll designed to appeal to collectors was introduced. The first black and Hispanic Barbie dolls were also introduced. Of special mention, the Happy Holidays Barbie series began in the 1980s. Barbie celebrated her 30th anniversary with the introduction of Pink Jubilee.

During the 1990s Barbie’s wardrobe expanded into new realms with original clothing created by top designers such as Bob Mackie, Nolan Miller, Vera Wang and Byron Lars. The dolls who were fortunate enough to sport such beautiful clothing were an instant hit with collectors. To celebrate her 35th anniversary, a reproduction of the original Barbie was issued, adding fuel to the demand for Barbie collectibles. Barbie’s official website was also launched during the 1990s.

While we wait with anticipation to see what the rest of the 2000s will bring for Barbie, we are already enjoying the Barbie Movie Star collection, one of the most dramatic Barbie collectibles to date. The 2000s have also brought the Fashion Model Collection and 40th anniversary Barbie and Ken.

With so many Barbie collectibles to admire and love, it’s hard to wait for the next generation of dolls to be introduced.
