Garfield characters to become Beanie Babies
The creator of the Garfield comic strip, Jim Davis, has announced an
agreement with Ty Inc. to create a series of Garfield Beanie Babies that
will be modeled after the characters in the upcoming movie entitled
"Garfield: The Movie" (Twentieth Century Fox). The movie will open
on June 11/04 and the Garfield Beanie Babies will be available in gift
stores and specialty stores in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the
US at around the same time.
The movie will feature both live animals and other computer generated
characters. The Beanie Babies will include characters from the
movie such as: Odie, Nermal, Arlene, Luca (a dog), and Louis (a
mouse) as well as Garfield. Voices of well known artists will
be featured for many of the characters. Bill Murray will
provide the voice for Garfield, and other actors to appear include
Breckin Meyer, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Stephen Tobolowsky.
Ty Warner first founded his company in 1986, and Beanie Babies
were first introduced to the world in late 1993. They were a
new style and instead of the typical stuffing that accompanied most
plush toys, these had a combination of beans and stuffing (small
plastic pvc pellets). This allowed the animal to sit up in
various different ways and positions.
The original nine Beanie Babies include: Legs the Frog, Squealer
the Pig, Brownie the Bear (renamed to Cubbie the Bear), Flash the
Dolphin, Splash the Whale, Patti the Platypus, Chocolate the Moose,
Spot the Dog, and Pinchers the Lobster. Ty is the leader in
plush toys and also includes Teenie Beanie Boppers, Punkies,
Pluffies, Ty Classics, and Beanie Buddies. The famous red Ty
Heart logo is found on all products and can be recognized around the
world.
