Berenstain Bears - The Fun Loving Bears From Bear Country

It would be hard to imagine life without the Berenstain Bears. Their adventures have taught millions of children about dealing with life's little problems, in a fun and gentle way. The Berenstain Bears stories are available in a variety of formats - in books, on video tape and DVD, on audio cassette or compact disc, on computer software and online.

A Little Berenstain Bear History

The Berenstain Bears were created by Stan and Jan Berenstain in1960. The first book featuring the lovable family was published in 1962. At that time, the bears were a family of three mother, father and brother. Sister was added in1974 as part of a story about a new baby joining the family. The book introducing sister was also the firstof the "First Time" story series. The characters of brother and sister are based on Stan and Jan's own children, Leo and Mike, even though Mike is a boy.

Originally created as a beginner book to help children to learn tho read, the Berenstain Bears have grown into as large collection of stories and videos that teach valuable lessons. One of the best things about the bears is that the lessons taught are done in a light-hearted manner. There’s no talking down or preaching, it all fits well within the story.

All The Berenstain Bears

If you haven’t met the Berenstain Bears, here’s a quick rundown of each one. Of course, like any family, each member has their own unique personality and outlook on life. And each has their own shortcomings, which helps create the adventures and lessons they experience together.

  • Papa Bear: The caretaker and leader of the Berenstain Bears, Papa loves his family with all his heart. A carpenter and woodsbear, Papa prides himself on knowing a little something about everything.
  • Mama Bear: An excellent cook, and protective mother, Mama Bear always does what’s right for her family. She’s president of the Bear Country Garden Club and a champion quilt maker. Mama devotes herself to keeping her family on track.
  • Brother Bear: A great athlete and avid soccer player, Brother’s curiosity sometimes gets him into trouble, but he always knows when to ask for help. Brother loves dinosaurs, bugs and being a little boy.
  • Sister Bear: Full of spunk and energy, Sister usually knows the right thing to do, but sometimes has trouble doing it. Sister loves the color pink and playing with her Bearbie doll, but she’s not afraid to hunt for bugs with Brother.
