Are Harry Potter Books good literature for our children?
Its no secret that Harry Potter Books are very controversial to
many parents who would like to see these books banned from our
schools. They seem to insist that Harry Potter Books invoke
evil spirits and that the tales get darker as he grows up. His
powers grow more potent and his deeds more sinister as the series
evolves. Their are critics who fear that the books will become
a catalyst for violence in our schools.
Proponents of Harry Potter Books try to assure us that all
episodes in the series distinguish between good and evil. That
the witchcraft and magic spells are just a boys fantasy world coming
to life. That there are no evil forces at work here but only
imagination and fantasy.
One must ask the question what is different about Harry Potter
Books and the science fiction and fairytale literature of the past.
How does this book compare to such works as King Arthur and his
magic sword, and the Adventures of Sinbad as well as other well
known fantasy stories throughout the years. I really don't
think that these classics have corrupted any young minds in anyway,
nor did they cause more violence to emerge. These famous tales
all had lessons, principles, morals and truths to be learned.
There's no doubt that Harry Potter Books have cast a spell on
children today, but is it not an enchanting one. Kids today
are reading not because they have to or because a teacher is making
them, but because they truly want to. They have put the videos
down and eagerly are flipping through the pages of Harry's
adventures, anxiously curious as to where he is headed. Is
this not a good enough reason to believe that this in itself is a
great benefit for increasing our children's reading skills and
developing their imagination.
