Building Your First Project With Model Kits

Model kits come in a variety of different sizes, types and makes.  You can choose from model kits that replicate cars, trucks, airplanes, helicopters, motorcycles or even boats to name just a few.  You name it and there is probably a version of it out there.  There are models that can depict a period in time and a style from another country.  Whether you are an aviation enthusiast or NASCAR racer,  your sure to find what you are looking for online at some of the excellent hobby shops that are currently available. Your main choices when starting your first project are do you want to purchase authentic looking versions of your favorite vehicle, or are you satisfied with a simple replicate that takes only minutes to piece together.  Your main choices will be from a respectable hobby shop who can offer tips and tricks, as well as scale replicas of the real thing, or from a simple toy shop where details are not that important.

Model kits can be made from many different types of material.  You can purchase models made from plastic, wood, metal, or resin to name just a few.  The most popular styles are made from polystyrene (styrene) plastic and are called injection kits. Styrene is a very smooth type of plastic that can be shaped into different sizes and intricate shapes.  This material is excellent for models because it is easy to mold, cut, sand and drill into, and you can also glue and paint the pieces with little trouble.

The size of the vehicle within model kits depends on the scale of the model as well as the size of the original object.  The most common size is 1/72 scale which means that the original size of the vehicle is 72 times larger then the model.  There are also many other popular scales such as 1/24, and 1/32, as well as very small ones such as 1/144.  You will find army vehicles such as tank and armor cars in the range of 1/35.  Ships and boats are in the area of 1/350 and 1/720.  Your choice in size is up to you and what you prefer.  A general rule of thumb is that a larger model will require more work on your part.  This is due to there being a little more detail to add to a larger area surface then on the smaller scaled designs.

There are literally thousands of different model kits to choose from, and when buying your first kit there are a number of decisions that you must first ask yourself.  Questions such as what style or model type, what scale size, and do I want a version from a certain period in history (e.g. from World War II.  Your age may play an important role in deciding what kit to buy first.  Many toy shops carry popular vehicles like the Spitfire, and Tomcat and these can be great for that younger child who is just getting started.  If you are looking at starting a new hobby or are a seasoned enthusiast then toy stores might not make the mark.  You definitely want to be looking into some of the excellent hobby stores that are out there.  They not only offer you a thousand choices, but can provide helpful advice on getting started or fixing something that has been bothering you for sometime.  Some of them even offer workshops that can show you step by step how to create your first model, and how to make it an exciting hobby for years to come.
