Model Railroads For First Time Buyers

If you are interested in modern model railroads then there are a few things you should know to help get you started.  A typical train set will include a locomotive, cars, track, and a power pack.  These are your basic requirements that are needed, and a little knowledge of what to look for can go a long way when going out there to purchase your first set.  Model railroads can be a lot of fun, as well as become a long term hobby for many years to come.  You need to be a well-informed consumer in order to get the right set that is appropriate for you.

A central piece to model railroads is the locomotive.  This is the heart of any train set.  There are a few main features that one should look for when purchasing the locomotive. If you are purchasing a diesel locomotive make sure they are all-wheel electrical pickup and at least eight wheel drive.  On the other hand steam locomotives should receive electricity from the drivers and the tender wheels.  Flywheels are good to have as part of the drive mechanism on diesel locomotives.  They help the locomotive operate more smoothly and negotiate a dirty track better.  You should avoid traction tires.  They were meant for overcoming poor adhesion, but do not do a good job.  They can't pick up electricity and cause an irritating wobbling.  Finally lower priced diesel trains tend to run better then lower priced steam ones.

The cars of many model railroads tend to be less detailed and fancy when purchasing your first set.  You can add more expensive versions to your set at a later date.  Most HO trains sets come with truck mounted horn-hook couplers, while most N scale models come with truck mounted rapido-style couplers.  You can also find replacement truck sets that have a more realistic and reliable knuckle couplers.

Model railroads include track pieces for both HO and N scale sets. These are the two most popular model railroading scales.  They are easy to assemble and contain built-in and cast-plastic roadbed.  The combination of track with plastic roadbed will help hold the track sections together, and replaces having to lay cork under the track.  To keep the tracks clean one must make sure to remove all sources of dust and dirt. To accomplish this you may want to put your set in a finished room.   Track cleaners fall into two categories: track cleaning cars which do the work for you, and products that get you to do the work.  Abrasive cleaners such as the Roco cleaning block are extremely effective for dirty tracks.   Liquid track cleaners are another option. With these you brush the cleaner on and wipe with a cloth.
