Model Trains Can Be A Long Lasting Hobby
So your thinking of purchasing some model trains and various
accessories for your first set? Well before you buy anything
its a good idea to get the low down on some important information
that will help get you started and up and running in no time at all.
When first purchasing model trains the best way to start is to read anything and
everything you can get your hands on. Whether your interested
in real (prototype) railroads, toy trains, or garden railroading,
there is book or magazine that is published for all your needs.
Next you should visit hobby stores. They can provide you with
further railroading information that can help give you an excellent
introduction into this exciting and fun hobby, that will last you
for years to come. Many of these hobby shops offer workshops
and lessons that will help get you started.
When getting started with model trains, the most traditional way
to get going is by purchasing a train set. Although this may
be the way most people get started it is not necessarily the only
way, nor necessarily the best way. When buying your first set
the most important thing to look for is reliability. One
should really consider purchasing a more higher priced train set
then some of the lower priced ones, like the ones found in toy
stores or discount chains. The lower priced ones typically
have poor quality locomotives, power packs and may run on a brass
track. Although the cheaper priced train sets may contain
additional extras like trees, buildings, and telephone poles, you
can also buy these things separate.
When purchasing model trains, your first concern should be in
getting a high quality locomotive. It is best to get the best
one that you can afford, and you won't regret it. Even if this
means a set with fewer bells and whistles, and fewer cars. In
general the more expensive the set the better the quality the
locomotive will be.
In starting out with your model trains hobby, you need not start
with a train set as your first option. In many cases its just
as easy go to the hobby store and ask the experts to recommend you a
locomotive, a few cars and a decent power rack. If money is an
issue then concentrate on getting a quality locomotive and power
rack, and purchase fewer cars and other accessories. You can
always get these at a later date. Just a few years ago
purchasing the track with any H or HO scale train set was very
important. The sections would easily get dirty, and come
apart, and carpet fuzz would get into the locomotive mechanism.
The electrical connection was also very insecure as well. This
has all changed quite considerably with newer sectional track from
Bachman, Kato and Life-Like, who include track sections mounted on
plastic or vinyl roadbed which locks the sections firmly together,
which ensures a good electrical connection.
