Monopoly board game a part of today's culture
In 1934 during the Depression, a man named Charles B. Darrow of
Germantown Pennsylvania introduced the first Monopoly game to the
executives at Parker Brothers. Much to his surprise they had
rejected it due to 52 design errors. This did not stop him
from realizing his dream so he had decided to produce the game on
his own. He used the help of a friend who was a printer, and
eventually sold approximately 5000 handmade copies to a department
store in Philadelphia. He couldn't keep up with the large
demand so later approached Parker Brothers again and the rest is
history. It was the biggest selling game in 1935, and to date
over 500 million people have played Monopoly over its 65 year
history. It is estimated that over 200 million games have been
sold worldwide, and it is published in 26 languages, and sold in 80
different countries.
Monopoly has grown over the years to incorporate many different
styles and editions. One can purchase this game in different
languages, with different cartoon characters, and using unique
themes to name just a few of the newer editions that have evolved
over the years. Some of the newer versions include:
- Monopoly Lord Of The Rings Trilogy Edition: play the
game with the Fellowship and buy the territories of Middle
Earth. Build strongholds and fortresses to secure your
holdings. You can acquire relics like the staff of the
wizards. Includes 6 Lord of the Rings tokens.
- Monopoly Disney: includes all of your favorite Disney
characters for the whole family to enjoy. The rules are the
same, and it features playing pieces such as Snowhite, Lady &
the Tramp, Cinderella, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Alice, and Baboo.
The property is represented as a cottage, and the Prince's
castle, and Scrooge McDuck is featured on the money.
- Monopoly NHL: excellent version for those sport fans.
You can buy, sell and trade all 32 NFC and AFC teams from the
Denver Broncos to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Token pieces
include a football, referee's whistle, quarterback, helmet,
cheerleader, and linebacker.
Also available is the Monopoly Party for Playstation 2. It
offers new rules and 3D graphics. Every player in the game
moves at the same time. Everyone rolls a set of dice at the same
time, as soon as everyone finishes rolling they all advance.
Then you can buy, sell and trade or pass Go. Includes
excellent colorful 3D graphical environments.
