Parker Brothers - the father of board games

In 1883 a young man by the named of George Parker had invented his first board game called Banking.  It became a huge success and he and his brother, Charles, had decided to start their own company called Parker Brothers.  Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Clue, Risk, and Boggle, are very much part of American, and Canadian cultures, and have been played by families all over the world.  All of theses games were published by one company, Parker Brothers.  This amazing company has turned many board games into cultural icons.  Other games such as Tiddledy Winks, Sorry, Nerf, and even the modern jigsaw puzzle have become a household name.

Some of the Top Parker Brothers games can easily be found online at very reasonable prices. You can find a great selection at sites like Amazon and KBtoys.  Some of the selections offered includes:

  • Parker Brothers: Risk - the game or world conquest, it features a tri-fold game board that is a map of six continents that are divided into 42 territories.  You move across continents and try to win by launching attacks, and defending your territory.  Includes five dice, 56 risk cards, and six sets of armies that contain 360 miniatures.  You can play three variations: World Domination, Capital Risk, and Secret Mission.
  • Parker Brothers: Boggle - how many words can you make in three minutes is the idea of the game.  Just turn over the three minute timer and starting hunting for words.  A small container holds 16 cubes, each cube marked with a different letter on each of its six sides.
  • Parker Brothers: Sorry - this classic game is great for children six years and up.  Each player draws cards and move their game pieces around the board, hoping to eventually accumulate all their pieces at the final destination.  Players can send each other's pawns back to the starting line.
  • Parker Brothers: Clue - this classic whodunit game has been around for more than 50 years.  Try to figure out who murdered Mr. Buddy, was it Miss Scarlet, or Colonel Mustard.  There are six suspects, six possible weapons, and nine rooms in the mansion.

Also available are a wide variety of Parker Brothers games for children from 3 years and up.  Outburst Jr. is the kid version of this popular game, where you shout out the answers to the topic cards: Name all the Jell-O flavors you can think of in 60 seconds? How many musical instruments you blow?  You have one minute to shout out the answer that may or may not be listed on the topic cards.  The game includes two decks of topic cards, cardholder, a score card, 60 second timer, and friendly instructions.

Another Parker Brothers children game is Hi Ho Cherry-O.  This game has been around for over 30 years, and is an excellent counting game for children 3 years and up.  Between two to four players choose a tree and place 10 plastic cherries on it.  Spin the dial and hope for a chance to pick one to four cherries to place in the bucket.  Pick out all 10 cherries from the tree and we have a winner.
