Global Strategizing With The Classic Risk Game

One of the best known and most played war games to come out over the years is the Risk Game.  Over the past years it has sold millions of copies, and is still a big seller even today.  It was first published in 1959 and has proven to be a long standing classic in board games.  The Risk Game has made various transformations over the years.  In 1986 we have the Castle version which was played on a map of Europe. In 2001 we have the 2210 AD version which features underwater and moon territories.  Finally 2002 brings us to the Lord Of The Rings version which is set in Middle Earth. Throughout the years this classic has been published in many different languages, and also computer versions.

The Risk Game is played with two to six players facing the challenge of being the last person standing.  The game ends when there is one player remaining, every piece on the board is the same color.  The board itself is a stylized map of the world divided into 42 territories.  Each player receives armies in order to attack adjacent territories and add them to their empire.  When the last territory of an empire is lost, that player leaves the game.  Various cards are won and sets formed to gain additional playing units.  This is one of the earliest examples of area control and set collecting that can be found within a board game.  If there are any conflicts they can be resolved by a dice roll.  A person who has a great deal of statistical knowledge stands a better chance of playing this game strategically.

Today you can find various versions of the Risk Game at great sites like Amazon who is in partnership with Toys R Us, or at KBToys.  Some of the versions they offer include:

  • The Original Risk Game - features a tri-fold game board, that is a map of six continents divided into 42 territories.  Try and launch daring attacks, and defend your territory while you move across continents.  Includes five dice, 55 risk cards, and six sets of armies that contain 360 miniatures.  Play three variations of the game: World Domination, Capital Risk, and Secret Mission Risk.
  • 2210 AD Risk Game - it is a game of global domination and beyond.  See if you can not only conquer the world, but also underwater cities and moon territories.  It features 455 futuristic military pieces and uses 5 decks of Command Cards for tactical surprises.
