A Guide To Buying Model Train Sets

Train sets are fun and exciting and provide hours of enjoyment.  Whether your a seasoned hobbyist or buying your first set, there are makes and models to please everyone.  Typical train sets include a locomotive, three to five freight or passenger cars, a wide supply of tracks to create an oval or a circle, a transformer or power pack, and a set of wires to connect the power pack with the track.  There is a piece of the track that is called the rerailer section which allows you to place the locomotive and the cars more easily onto the track.  A more sophisticated set might include a turnout, which is a track switch, and various accessories such as a telephone pole, tunnels, bridges, other small structures, and trees.  You should be well informed of the various features when purchasing your first train sets, and evaluate your needs.

When purchasing train sets you must consider the size or scale that you are looking for.  The age of the child is a good indicator as to what scale model to start them with.  The scale is the relative proportion of the model to its real life counterpart.  One of the most popular scales is the HO, which is in a proportion of 1:87, or 1/87th of the actual size.  The next most popular scale is the the N scale, which is 1:160, or 1/160th of the actual size.  The most popular large scale models are the 1:22.5 and can range from 1:32 or 1:20.3.  Other common scales within North America include the O scale  (1:48),S (1:64), and Z (1:220).

A good guide to buying train sets for that younger child is that the younger the child then the larger the scale should be.  Children eight years and up will do fine with an HO scale model.  Children that are younger then eight years old may find that the smaller the equipment, the harder it may be for them to handle.  So scales such as O and S and other larger scale sets will have larger equipment that they may find easier to handle, and more enjoyable for them.  If you are purchasing the set for and adult then appropriate scales may include anywhere from Z to larger scales.  If limited space is a factor then you may want to try scales such as N and HO.

When buying train sets you should consider this as a future investment.  Getting a quality well crafted model will last you for years to come, and can be passed down from generation to generation.  It is a excellent hobby and one that can be most rewarding.  It can teach you skills such as artistry, creativity, building techniques, electrical wiring, as well as problem solving skills.  Purchasing your set from reputable hobby stores can be more beneficial then from other retailers.  They will offer you better services for repairs, employees from hobby shops are much more knowledgeable of various models,  and finally hobby stores carry accessories, parts and other add-ons that retailers may not.
