Trivial Pursuit A Canadian Invention

On December 15, 1979, two Canadians Chris Haney and Scott Abbott had conceived one of the most famous and popular board games called Trivial Pursuit. It was designated by Time Magazine as one of the biggest phenomenon in game history. Both guys at the time were occupied in different professions.  Chris was a Photo Editor at the Montreal Gazette, and Scott was a Sports Journalist for the Canadian Press.  It didn't take them long to come up with the basic idea for Trivial Pursuit, in fact only a few short hours.  They were playing Scrabble when they decided to come up with their own board game.

On November 10, 1981, Trivial Pursuit was trademark registered, and over a thousand copies were first published in Canada.  Haney and Abbott had taken on two more business partners, Ed Werner - a Corporate Lawyer, and John Haney - Chris's brother.  They had sold five shares of the company for as little as a thousand dollars.  They eventually sought the help of eighteen year old artist Michael Wurstlin who agreed to create the final artwork for the game in exchange for his five shares.

The first copies of Trivial Pursuit were sold at a loss.  The manufacturing costs for the game were seventy-five dollars per game, and the game sold for fifty dollars per game.   Eventually the game was licensed in 1983 to Selchow and Righter who is a major U.S. game manufacturer and distributor.  The manufacturers financed a successful public relations effort and the game became a household name.  In December 1993, the successful board game was named to the Games Hall of Fame by Games magazine.

Trivial Pursuit has evolved over the years to include a variety of different editions that are easily available at great sites like Amazon, USAopoly, and KBtoys.  Newly created editions include: the 20th Anniversary Edtion, Pop Culture DVD Game, Lord of the Rings version, the know-it-all edition and even a junior games version in a kid-friendly format for children eight years and up.
