Xbox vs PS2 – Choosing The Best Video Game Console
Buying your first video game console can be a daunting task with the number of choices
available today. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are the three top platforms out there, but
which system will be the best choice for me, will it be Xbox vs PS2? There are a number of issues one must consider
when choosing multimedia entertainment systems. We have compiled a quick guide
list on some of the major
items that one must look for before choosing the right system.
Gaming Hardware
The hardware is the heart of any gaming system and one wants to be sure that they have
enough memory and a fast cpu to be able to run some of the leading games out there. With todays
video game consoles, hardware seems to be less and less a major issue. For the most part the games
that are released on all three major systems offer similar gaming experiences on all three of the
leading video game technologies. Hardware considerations do come into play in terms of the
additional features like playing DVD movies or Online connectivity. The Xbox is the technically
advanced gaming console in terms of its processing power, which is followed by the
Nintendo GameCube and
Sony Playstation 2.
However there are hardware considerations to look in terms of how you play your games:
- Hardware Disks and Internal Memory – there has to be enough available free memory in order to save gaming progress, download extra game levels, as well as playing certain games. The GameCube and PS2 systems have memory cards that are purchased separate, while the Xbox uses an internal hard drive. With the larger Xbox hard drive you will be able store music and other downloadable content
and may never need to buy additional memory such as in the PS2 system.
- Online Connections – if you want to play against other gamers on the internet,
or download the latest game content then internet connectivity is a very important
consideration. The Xbox contains a built in Ethernet port that allows for an easy
online connection. The PS2 system can be purchases with an Ethernet and modem adapter,
but the slim form factor comes with the Ethernet integrated. Microsoft has
spent more money on their online gaming support and there is no better gaming
network then the Xbox LIVE, which is an exclusive Xbox service that connects
gamers from all over the world. It features voice chat, downloadable game content,
and communication with other gamers.
- Playing DVD’s – The PS2 is capable of playing DVD’s right out of the box, and the
Xbox has this capability if you purchase and extra DVD accessory. Both of these systems
do play DVD’s very well but the one advantage that the Xbox accessory has is the
inclusion of a remote control.
Finally an important consideration is the games that you want to play. There are many games
that are released on all platforms. You will have to make sure that your specific game is available
on the machine that you are considering purchasing. The Xbox system does have more that double the
games available for the GameCube, but are they games that you personally want to play. The quantity of the games
available is not necessarily better than the quality of games available.
